Good question.  Why do people always associate endurance with fitness?  Although and important part of fitness, it does not encompass fitness.

Comments:  Do you think our community in Park City has a misconception of what fitness really is and requires?

Amen Brotha. I used to think the skinnier the better and the more miles/time running I put in the the more fit I would be. What was I thinking??!!??!! After Crossfit has shown me the light:) …..I feel more strong, healthy, fit, and lean than I EVER have running all those hours/miles!

Most residents in PC do have a misconception of what fitness is, and the type of workouts required to obtain desirable levels of fitness. We have a very predictable workout routine for most people in the area.

In the summer, most people mountain bike, or road bike for fitness. By itself, probably not a comprehensive form of fitness. Biking is a great form of recreation that could potentially be an integral part of a comprehensive fitness program. Biking performance could be improved by incorporating a fitness program such as crossfit.

In the winter most people ski, or snowboard the resorts. I have skied for 44 years and have ski instructed, 25 years. Skiing is a great form of recreation, but again, not a form of fitness. But, personal performance could be greatly improved when a fitness program supplements the skiing or boarding.

Fitness in my opinion, is a form of disciplined workouts designed to help you excel at these more popular forms of recreation in PC. Crossfit works for me, I think everyone should try it!

Great work this morning, Dawn Patrollers.

All, I think its likely many of us may have some pull up tears today. I found a good article yesterday and wanted to pass it along.

    Article on “Crossfit Hand Health”:

Good video on how to tape your hands to protect your palms:

People equate or define fitness to the type of activity they do. For example to be a strong cyclist you need a strong engine and legs but not neccessarily a strong upper body. So to get “fit” the cyclist will forcus on the activities that will make them a “fit” cyclist. I think we fall or have fallen in to this mind set at on time or another.

But as I have gotten older and maybe wiser (no comment Eric) my definition of fitness has changed with my fitness goal being “what can I do to increase durability, longevity and maximize my overall strength that enhances my lifestlye?”

This is what brought me to Crossfit. Not only did it “fill in” my fitness gap, it also made me more efficent in my other activities as well. Plus if I get into a situation where I need more gas then I know I’ll have it.

Fitness…a life long project! I used to just run, swim, run, swim, and only did “weights” to rehab some body part that had been operated on. I always wanted to have a “Crossfit” type program to balance everything out. Crossfit does the job so well of helping with not only our favorite activities, but daily life as well. After this morning’s workout I feel so good that I can do things like that at my age! Thanks for everything, Crossfit trainers fellow 6 AM workout buddies and everyone who comes to the gym throughout the day to keep things so much fun.

  6. Ok well at home in FLAT boring Florida, CrossFit makes me feel strong and fit, but after doing your WOD today (myself, cuz I can’t seem to make your class as usual) I feel completely out of shape! And didn’t you finish this one in like 18 or something Chris? I think no matter what kind of fitness people do out here, just having the challenge of the terrain and altitude immediately adds a higher level of fitness!!

Living and working in PC is interesting, because “endurance” athletes are everywhere. As a nutrition coach, I am able to see not only the physical consequences, but the internal consequences of endurance training.

If improperly taken care of, the body really breaks down hard. Sometimes it can be irreversible, so it is extremely important to find that balance phyiscal activity and rest in order to be healthy. It is not just about aesthetics.

It is also great to be reminded that our body is our one and only, and to nourish it and take care of it. If we do that, it will take care of us, and we can actually get out and enjoy life in the process!! :)

Great comments and insight guys. DB, never thought of it like that and it’s a great explanation for some of the misconceptions out there. Ron, hit the nail on the head buddy. That’s our goal here in Park City. Don’t take away from what you do outside the gym, make it better.
